I believe the question is if you can add focus effects or clickies to items with research. The answer is no.

I think the question is about researching the Rk II variations of spells. The answer is yes, they can be, and they're the only ranks that can be. Rank I is vendor purchased and Rk III are only available to raiders.

if that is the question, then your statement is true Rk II are the research-able variants.
