The type 3 drops are more common than they used to be, but they're still not as common as their respective standard items. In most cases there is a 60/40 split between "normal" drop and "rare" drop on an NPC, and then that split is split again for the standard and the type 3 version of the "normal." So, looking at a Brell's Rest table:

  • Common drop is a manaclasses earring, 60%.
  • Rare drop is a melee ring, 40%.
Those are then split (also at 60/40) for the normal drops and the type 3 drops, so the final table looks like this:

  • manaclasses earring normal - 36%
  • manaclasses earring type 3 - 24%
  • melee ring normal - 24%
  • melee ring type 3 - 16%
In previous expansions type 3s dropped at about 35%, so bumping them to 40% is a significant swing - that's what you're noticing.

We also had more items that don't have a type 7 only version - weapons, shields, augs, and non-standard items only have type 3 versions, and in as many cases as we could fit them these items take the 40% rare drop slot. Here's an example table:

  • priest ring normal - 36%
  • priest ring type 3 - 24%
  • 1hs - 40%
So off of that rare mob you're more likely to get something with a type 3 than not.
