Having absolutely no knowledge of what's going on with EQ Next (they're a private bunch to allow them to work without distraction), I can tell you that I believe it IS possible to appeal to both the casual and hardcore player within the same game. The key is to give everyone content they can play and enjoy. Give the casuals tons of quests, missions, tradeskills, etc., and give the hardcore the tough, unforgiving raid game they so desperately crave.
It CAN be done.
HOWEVER... Don't expect EQ Next to be EQ with pretty graphics.
