The system doesn't automatically send back items from your base inventory slots or shared bank until you log into a character on that lapsed account.
So, if you were to have a few days where your account lapsed as long as you re-sub before logging in your items will say right where they are.
Will you get a warning that your account has lapsed from Gold prior to logging in?
There currently isn't a warning, but there is a display of your membership level directly below the "Enter World" button on the character select screen.
