Here's a couple of things to think about. If we were to make a vertiable cornucopia of items to choose from, where would you find the space to make all those items available? It's already getting pretty crowded with the current number of items.

As for gear choices, players would just do the math to find the best choice possible and farm only that piece since everything else is inferior. That pretty much invalidates the idea of more desirable class specific gear since that would just end up being the new standard instead of an alternative. It's pretty hard to design around that.

I'm always interested in new ideas though so keep throwing them out there.
