Of course a fix is possible, but currently...
When you turn into an illusion, it looks to be sure the FULL SIZE version will fit in the space.
Unfortunately, for a dragon that is a large space, even shrunk down.
It is unfortunately a rather time intensive fix to fix this, and being something that is, as you say, not a "game vital" item, we are currently not planning on spending the code resources to fix it.
And for a second point...
Dragons have a HUGE amount of pollys.... to many of them and you will start to cause lag issues for some slower computers... if I was a raid leader, I would ban them on raids.
